Writing a Personal Statement
Writing a personal statement is both an art and a science. Your goal is to adequately sell yourself in a succinct and interesting way that will make you stand out from the thousands of other applicants. This is not an easy task considering that every applicant is trying to accomplish that same feat. So how is it done?
The key to creating a high-quality personal statement is to ensure that the piece is both engaging and informative. Experience
I began my career as a writer at a young age, excelling in creative writing and short stories. My passion for writing and my proficiency continued to grow throughout high school and college, as I began writing more technically in pursuit of a chemical engineering degree.
In law school, I was exposed to new forums to express myself and distribute my writings. I became an associate and regular contributor to the Case Western - Internet Law Journal, and was one of the first writers ever to comment on the legal and ethical ramifications of China’s internet censorship laws. I also wrote several lengthy dissertations, analyzing a variety of legal issues ranging from international war crimes, to human cloning, to affirmative action. The substance and quality of my works were recognized by several prestigious law journals, leading to a string of publications after law school. Over the past few years, I have continued to write articles at a steady pace and have been published in numerous local publications, including Michigan State Bar newsletters and Lawyer’s Weekly.
